Vattakotai Fort History – All that You Wanted to Know
The fort was built in 1729 by the Travancore King Marthanda Varma under Captain Eustachius De Lannoy, a Dutch naval officer. It was meant to fortify against the enemies and was the last coastal fort built by the Travancore Kingdom. Although Vattakottai means circular, the defense is rectangular. It is surrounded by grand walls reaching a height of 25-26 feet, taking up an area of about 3.5 acres. It includes watchtowers, weapon rooms, and multiple other facilities to protect the soldiers from enemy attacks.
Not long ago, you could see the Padmanabhapuram Palace from the peak of the fort. There was also a broad tunnel connecting the defense to the palace – it is now closed, and you can see the parade ground.
