Suchindram Shree Thanumalayan Swamy Temple
The Stanumalayan Temple in Suchindrum is dedicated to the Trinity, i.e., Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Legend has it that Lord Indra was cured of his curse here; hence the name – Suchi, meaning purify, and Indran, referring to the King of the Devas.
Arulmigu Sri Nagaraja Temple
This temple is dedicated to Nagaraja, the King of Serpents. The town of Nagercoil gets its name from the temple. Locals believe that offering turmeric and milk to the naga idols in the temple would relieve people from naga dosha.
Mathoor Aqueduct
This is Asia’s tallest and longest trough bridge, originally built to carry irrigation water from the Pattanamkal canal to the taluks of Vilavancode and Kalkulam. The bridge was commissioned by the erstwhile Chief Minister K. Kamaraj and is now a major tourist attraction.
Vivekananda Memorial
The Vivekananda Memorial was built to commemorate Swami Vivekananda’s visit to Kanyakumari. It is believed that he attained spiritual enlightenment, leading to the Kanyakumari Resolve, wherein he decided to dedicate his life to the vision of One India.
Bhagavathi Amman Temple, Kanyakumari
The Kanyakumari Temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakti and is believed to be a manifestation of the goddess as an adolescent girl. It is one of the 108 Shakti peethams and an important pilgrimage place for the Shaktism.
Thiruparappu Falls
This artificial waterfall falls from over 50 feet into a picturesque pool where kids and adults can enjoy the cascading waters. The weir constructed helps supply irrigation water to the nearby villages.
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial
The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial was built to honour the Father of the Nation. After his death, Gandhiji's ashes were placed in 12 urns to be disbursed across India. The urn brought to Kanyakumari was placed exactly in the spot where it was placed.
Padmanabhapuram Palace
This is the world’s largest wooden palace, covering an area of 6.5 acres and several structures built between 1590 and early 1800. The palace was the royal mansion of the erstwhile Travancore Family that ruled the kingdom from the capital, Padmanabhapuram.
Arulmigu Sri Mandaikadu Bhagavathiamman Temple
The Mandaikadu Bhagavathiamman Temple is dedicated to Devi Parvathi, also known as Goddess Shakti. It is believed that the temple was built in the same place where Sri Adi Sankaracharya performed puja to the Sri Chakra. Unlike other temples, the main deity is prayed to in the form of a 15-foot ant hill.
Vattakotai Fort
As the name suggests, Vattakotai Fort is a circular fort constructed in the 18th century for Marthanda Varma. Later, it was reconstructed under the supervision of the Dutch naval officer De Lannoy. The fort offers a picturesque view of the Arabian Sea on the one side and the Western Ghats on the other.
Udayagiri Fort
The Udayagiri Fort was initially built in the 17th century but later rebuilt by Marthanda Varma, the King of Travancore, in the 18th century. The fort was used to hold prisoners caught in the campaign against Tipu Sultan. It also holds the tomb of De Lannoy, the Chief of the Travancore Army.
